Surmodics (NASDAQ:SRDX) shareholders are up 12% this past week, but still in the red over the last year
Stock Analysis
Surmodics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SRDX) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 12% in the last week. But that isn't much consolation to those who have suffered through the declines of the last year. During that time the share price has sank like a stone, descending 55%. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Arguably, the fall was overdone.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Surmodics fell to a loss making position during the year. Buyers no doubt think it's a temporary situation, but those with a nose for quality have low tolerance for losses. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

We regret to report that Surmodics shareholders are down 55% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 14%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Surmodics you should know about.
